The End of an Era: Richard Simmons’ Life and Sudden Passing
In the 1980s, many turned to the legendary fitness icon Richard Simmons to shed some pounds and get in shape. Simmons’ workout videos stood out because they were far from typical. He knew that people were more likely to keep exercising and getting healthy if they genuinely enjoyed what they were doing.
Throughout his life, Simmons created numerous workout videos, including Sweatin’ to the Oldies (1988), Supersweatin’: Party Off the Pounds (2006), Boogie Down the Pounds (2013), Latin Blast Off (2001), Tonin’ Downtown (1998), and many more.
A Sudden Loss

Sadly, on July 13, Richard Simmons passed away, just one day after celebrating his 76th birthday. Simmons was reportedly found dead in his Los Angeles home by his housekeeper, who immediately called 9-1-1. Initially, police determined that his death was due to natural causes, with no foul play suspected.
Investigations Underway
However, the Medical Examiner’s Office has now deferred Simmons’ cause of death pending further investigation. This has led to a police investigation and additional testing, including a toxicology workup, to determine the official cause.
Mysterious Circumstances
Reports from TMZ indicate that Simmons had been feeling dizzy on his birthday. Despite his housekeeper’s suggestion to visit the hospital, Simmons opted to wait until the next day. Tragically, he fell in his bathroom later that night and hit his head. Although there were no visible signs of injury, the toxicology report — which could take six to eight weeks — may provide more insights.
A Storied Career
While best known for his lively exercise videos, Simmons also had a career in acting. He appeared in films and TV shows such as Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer: The Movie (1988), What Women Want (2000), the soap opera General Hospital, and the animated series Fish Hooks.
Before his death, Simmons had not been seen in public since 2014. His sudden passing leaves a legacy of fitness and joy, along with many unanswered questions about his final days.
