Intense Storm Shuts Down Disney World Monorail, Leaving Guests Stranded

Yesterday at Walt Disney World Resort, the magic took an unexpected turn.

Orlando, known for its warm weather, rarely deals with snow, allowing Disney World to operate year-round. However, rain and storms are common, especially during Florida’s wet season from June to October.

Florida’s Weather Woes

Florida experiences frequent thunderstorms and heavy rainfall during the wet season. Afternoon storms are typical, often bringing lightning, gusty winds, and intense downpours.

Hurricanes are another concern. Florida sees about six named storms, three hurricanes, and one major hurricane annually. This year, AccuWeather predicts an active hurricane season with 20 to 25 named storms and up to 12 hurricanes.

Disney World’s Storm Preparedness

Despite the stormy weather, Disney World remains a safe haven. The park’s buildings, including Cinderella Castle, can withstand a Category 5 hurricane. Cast members are well-trained in hurricane safety, ensuring guests remain secure even during severe weather.

Lightning Strike Causes Monorail Chaos

Yesterday’s massive storm caused significant disruptions. Guests traveling from Magic Kingdom to EPCOT reported that their monorail was struck by lightning, causing it to go down for over an hour and a half.

The lightning strike cut the monorail’s power, leaving guests trapped without air conditioning. The rising heat inside the monorail led to panic attacks among some passengers. Smoke began to appear, and cast members had to break the glass windows to ensure the safety of everyone on board.

Breaking the glass is a standard safety protocol in such situations. Cast members are trained to handle these emergencies safely. Eventually, all guests were safely removed, though the experience was far from magical.

Preparedness Is Key

Unlike the Disney Skyliner, the monorail does not have a supply pack for emergencies. This incident highlights the importance of being prepared for Florida’s unpredictable weather while visiting Disney World.

Despite the challenges, Disney World continues to prioritize guest safety, ensuring that even in the face of severe weather, the magic can still be enjoyed.
