How Do Disneyland Stormtroopers Talk?

Disneyland’s Stormtroopers are a favorite in the park largely because of their funny one-liners.

But, if you’ve ever seen them in action, you’ll probably start to wonder, how exactly do they speak the way they do?

When you listen to a Stormtrooper talking at Disneyland, you aren’t actually hearing the actor’s voice. Instead, the Stormtroopers use pre-recorded speech, which they trigger by using hand motions and their blasters. To accomplish this, they utilize a 2013 Disney patent for an intricate voice system.

How Does the Disneyland Stormtrooper Voice Technology Work?

I won’t go into the details of exactly how the voice technology works because it’s pretty complicated.

(If you are interested in the specifics behind the tech, though, you can read about Disney’s patent here.)

Yet, I can give you the basics of how the Stormtroopers use this audio/motion technology to say so many different phrases in a pre-recorded voice.

Basically, the actor in the Stormtrooper costume navigates through a dialogue tree to choose what to say next.

They then choose the dialogue they want by pressing buttons on their blasters or through hand signals.

It seems that the original patent for the technology had sensors in the thumb and index finger of the trooper’s glove, which interpreted the meaning of the movement and triggered the voice response.

But, there may have been upgrades to the Stormtroopers’ voice system since the tech came out in 2013.

However, if there has been, it doesn’t seem as though Disney has released that information.

If you watch the Stormtroopers, though, you can see that they make a lot of movement when they speak, which shows that they are using the sensor system to play audio.

Do Other Characters Use This Type of Voice Technology?

Unfortunately, Disney has not said if other characters use the same voice technology as the Stormtroopers.

Yet, many people think that Kylo Ren and Darth Vader do use the same sort of technology because of the way they move when they talk.

What Do Disneyland Stormtroopers Say?

Well, Disneyland does change the pre-recorded audio tracks from time to time to keep things fresh, but there are specific phrases that the troopers use a lot.

For instance, one of the most common sayings they voice is “Move along.”

They also like to ask guests for identification or joke with them and ask them if they have permission to be there.

“Have you sworn allegiance to the First Order?” and “Take it easy, citizen” are also some popular quotes voiced by the troopers.

But, really, it is the way they interact with the crowd, and not their exact words, that make the Stormtroopers so fun.

These actors really get into character and do their best to ensure guests have a great time when they’re in Disneyland.

Of course!

Anyone is free to talk to and interact with the characters in Disneyland.

Can I Dress Like a Stormtrooper at Disneyland?

Basically, no, you can’t.

First of all, you should be aware that Disneyland’s dress code prohibits guests over the age of 13 from wearing costumes to the park.

However, the rules on what Disney considers a “costume” aren’t too strict.

Like, Disneyland does allow you to piece together clothing items to make yourself look like a character.

For example, you can wear a white dress and do your hair like Princess Leia.

You just can’t wear the elaborate sort of costumes that you would buy from, say, a Halloween store.

Thus, guests can not wear things like body armor, helmets, or face paint.

Disneyland patrons also can’t put on character masks, carry weapon lookalikes (except for plastic lightsabers), or wear a full-body character suit.

So, as you can see, you can’t really dress like a Stormtrooper because Disneyland prohibits most aspects of the costume.

Can I See Other Star Wars Characters in Disneyland?

Yes, there are many other Star Wars characters in the park, and you can typically see them at Disneyland’s Galaxy Edge.

Some of the characters that you and your family can expect to see include:

  • Vi Moradi
  • Chewbacca
  • R2-D2
  • Kylo Ren
  • Rey
  • Darth Vader

What Else Is in Galaxy’s Edge?

People at Galaxy's Edge, the Star Wars themed attraction

Galaxy’s Edge is a whole Star Wars-themed area in Disneyland Park, where you can find tons of great Star Wars attractions, shops, and restaurants.

Galaxy’s Edge Attractions

Galaxy’s Edge has two main attractions: Millennium Falcon – Smugglers Run and Star Wars – Rise of the Resistance.

Millennium Falcon – Smugglers Run is an interactive smuggling mission where you’ll enter the cockpit of the Millennium Falcon and choose your role in the upcoming assignment.

From there, you’ll blast off on the ship and help your team as you try to reach your goal.

Meanwhile, Star Wars – Rise of the Resistance is another attraction where you get to battle the First Order and help to bring them down alongside Rey and BB-8.

Galaxy’s Edge Shops

The shops that you can visit in Galaxy’s Edge include:

  • Savi’s Workshop – Here, you can build your own custom lightsaber.
  • Droid Depot – In the Depot, you can design and build your own droid.
  • Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities – This store sells a range of Star Wars merchandise, including apparel, toys, and collectibles.
  • First Order Cargo – First Order Cargo, of course, centers around the First Order and sells plenty of apparel, pins, toys, and collectibles.

Galaxy’s Edge Food

The two main food stalls in Galaxy’s Edge are the Milk Stand and Ronto Roasters.

At the Milk Stand, you can try out the blue milk that Luke Skywalker drank in the movies.

Meanwhile, Ronto Roasters serves scrumptious sausage and pork wraps.

How Do I Become a Disneyland Stormtrooper?

Since the Stormtroopers are now one of the most memorable characters roaming Disneyland, many people are interested in becoming one.

But, becoming a Stormtrooper isn’t as easy as just showing up and throwing on a costume.

Interested individuals have to audition at Disneyland, where they must show that they are energetic, quick thinking, and imaginative.

They also have to be at least 18 years old, have slim builds, and be between 5 feet 10 inches and 6 feet tall.

Conclusion

The Stormtroopers at Disneyland speak with guests by using a rather sophisticated voice technology system that requires them to move their hands and use their props in certain ways.

These complex systems are what make the Stormtroopers so much fun to interact with when you’re in the park.
